Robert asks…

As a American, what will I need to get back into the US from Mexico?

I am planning on going to Tijuana Mexico in a few days, but I have no clue on what type of ID is required to get back into the US. I have my birth certificate as well as my California ID, but I wanted to know if that is all I need?

Tijuana answers:

Well… The official answer is that you need a Passport or Passport Card. But since you say you are going in a few days you need the unofficial answer.

Take your CDL and birth certificate; it will work.

How much grief you get from the Border Patrol agent at the gate will depend on if you look hispanic, fit any profile for someone trying to sneak in, or just that he’s suspicious. The agent has total discretion at that point, so be nice!

But as an American citizen, you can get back into your country. Even if the agent does not pass you immediately, it only means they will send you to secondary to check the documents and make sure you are who you say you are. There are no fines… It just takes a little more time, and often they pass you right through.

Don’t worry. It will work. Hopefully there won’t be a whole carload of you without passports…

BTW, you can get a Passport Card at the post office for around $40 (much cheaper) if you think you will be returning to Mexico. It works so long as you drive or walk across the US border. If you fly, you need the Passport. Also, the Card works for those just taking a cruise.

Enjoy your visit!

Paul asks…

How long does it take to drive from Long Beach to Tijuana?

How long does it take to drive from Long Beach, CA to a good shopping area in Tijuana, Mexico? Or what if you don’t want to drive all the way there? How long does it take to drive to the border, park and walk across? Is the border in San Diego or San Ysidro?

Tijuana answers:

I would allow 2.5-3.5 hours, depending on traffic and time of day.

Crossing the border in a car takes no time at all. They just wave you through. HOWEVER, you have to buy special Mexican insurance, since US insurance is not valid in Mexico. And unlike the US, if y ou have an accident in Mexico and have no insurance, you go to JAIL (Do not pass Go, do not collect $200). And the drive back across can easily exceed 3 hours, due to security.

Alternatives include parking at San Ysidro (a suburb of San Diego) and walking across. Beware of unscrupulous taxi drivers who have no qualms about taking advantage of females. If you go in a taxi, don’t go alone, and negotiate the fare BEFOREHAND. Or better yet, just walk. It’s only about 1/2 mile. Walking back to the US is much faster than driving, only about 30 minutes last time I did it.

Other alternatives include parking in San Diego and taking the Red Trolley, which stops about 10 feet from the border. Or even taking Amtrak to San Diego, then taking the trolley.

However, I would not, could not go to northern Mexico at this time. There has been too much violence over control of the drug trade. Americans are being kidnapped and killed. Back in the day, it was safe to go at least as fare as Rosarito or Ensenada. Now those days are gone. I would STRONGLY advise against it at this time.
