Visit Mexico From Us

David asks…

how many calories in corn tamales from Mexico?

Im visiting Mexico and they sell these corn tamales off the street. They are REAL tamales, not the ones in the US. They are inside corn husks and have green salsa and chicken inside. Does anyone know the calories in these? Or if they are high or low in calories? Any help would be appreciated!

Tijuana answers:

200-500 calories aprox. ( + calories for bread)

Actually, im in Mexico, sooo there is many hispanics. lol. but thanks.

Tijuana answers:

You must not live in a area with a large Hispanic population. In my area, you can get tamales of all varieties made traditionally. I make my own and I am not Mexican, but my friends and co-workers who are love them. By daughters ex-boyfriend said mine were better than his grandmothers!
I use lard in my masa most of the time, but sometimes half and half lard and canola or olive oil.
That right there will be a lot of calories.
The fillings I have used are beef, chicken, pork, cooked/shredded in some kind of sauce and sometimes really spicy. I usually use fairly non-lean cuts of meat, but not super fatty – so there is going to be some extra calories there.
I would imagine one of my tamales – or my friends who make them in similar fashion – would be around 400-500 each. Keep in mind, these are light on the masa and heavy on filling.

Tijuana answers:

Not to worry Angel. All you both need are your Green Cards.
You are both Passport Exempt.
No Passport required. This includes all forms of travel. (Sea ,Air and Land.) You are ,however ,limited to travelling from the U.S and back from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda. All other places require a passport and your Green Card to go back to the U.S
They are WHTI valid travel documents.
